Perfect Contouring Guide for Beginners

Contouring is the makeup technique that can completely transform the shape of your face — slimming your nose, defining your cheekbones, and sculpting your jawline. Here's how to do it properly.

Understanding Your Face Shape: Oval faces suit almost any contouring style. Round faces benefit from contouring the sides of the face and forehead. Square faces look great with soft contouring on the jawline corners.

Products You Need: A contour powder or cream 2–3 shades darker than your skin tone (use cool-toned, ashy browns — not orange or bronzer shades). A highlight powder or cream. A fluffy contour brush and a smaller precision brush.

Step 3 — Blend Thoroughly: The word 'contour' comes from the Italian word for 'outline' — but great contouring has NO visible lines. Blend until there are no harsh edges. This is the most important step.

Step 4 — Highlight: Apply a highlighter (slightly lighter than your skin tone) on the tops of your cheekbones, center of the nose, cupid's bow, and center of the forehead.

Step 5 — Set with Powder: If using cream products, lightly set with a translucent powder to prevent creasing. If using powder products, you can skip this step.
