Smoky Eye for Beginners

The smoky eye is the most classic and dramatic eye look in makeup. It looks intimidating but once you learn the technique, it becomes second nature. Here's how to nail it as a beginner.

Products You Need: Eyeshadow palette with dark shades (black, charcoal, brown), a fluffy blending brush, a flat shader brush, black or dark brown eyeliner, and mascara.

Step 1 — Prime Your Eyes: Apply an eye primer or a dab of concealer on your eyelids. This prevents creasing and makes the colors appear more vibrant and long-lasting.

Step 2 — Apply Transition Shade: Use a medium brown shade and a fluffy brush to blend it into your crease using windshield wiper motions. This creates depth and helps the darker shades blend seamlessly.

Step 3 — Build the Dark Shade: Using a flat shader brush, apply a dark charcoal or black shadow on your lower lid, from lash line to crease. Don't worry about being perfect — we'll blend it.

Step 4 — Blend, Blend, Blend: Switch to your fluffy brush and blend the edges of the dark shade using circular and windshield wiper motions. The key to a beautiful smoky eye is seamless blending — spend most of your time on this step.

Step 5 — Add Depth: Apply a touch of black shadow right at the lash line and outer corner of your eye to intensify the look. Blend slightly.

Step 6 — Lower Lash Line: Apply your dark eyeshadow or a smudged pencil liner along your lower lash line. Blend it out slightly for a sultry, lived-in look.

Step 7 — Highlight the Inner Corner: Apply a shimmery white or champagne shadow to the inner corner of your eye. This opens up the eye and adds a beautiful contrast.

Step 8 — Mascara: Apply 2–3 coats of volumizing mascara to your upper lashes. Curl them first for maximum impact.
