Basic Dog Training Commands Every Dog Should Know

Training your dog is one of the most loving things you can do for them. A well-trained dog is safer, happier, and gets to enjoy more freedom. Here are the 6 essential commands every dog must know.

The Golden Rules of Dog Training: Always use positive reinforcement — reward what you want to see more of. Keep sessions short (5–10 minutes) and fun. End on a success. Be consistent — every family member must use the same commands.

Command 1 — Sit: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose. Slowly move your hand up, which causes their bottom to lower. Once they're in sitting position, say 'Sit', give the treat and praise. Practice 5 times per session.

Command 2 — Stay: Ask your dog to sit. Open your palm in front of you and say 'Stay'. Take a few steps back. If they stay, reward with a treat. Gradually increase distance and duration over days.

Command 3 — Come: This recall command can save your dog's life. Crouch down at your dog's level. Say 'Come' in an excited, happy voice. When they reach you, reward enthusiastically with treats and praise.

Command 4 — Leave It: Hold a treat in both hands. Show your dog one closed fist and say 'Leave it'. They'll sniff and paw at your hand. When they stop, reward with the treat from the OTHER hand.

Command 5 — Down: Hold a treat in your closed fist at the dog's nose. Move your hand to the floor slowly. Their body should follow. Once they're down, say 'Down' and reward.

Command 6 — Heel: Teach your dog to walk calmly beside you without pulling. Start indoors. Say 'Heel' and reward them for walking next to your leg. Gradually move to more distracting environments.
